Hawaii isn't typically known as a discount travel destination. You can spend a lot of money on a modest vacation going to the pacific island paradise. Building a discount travel itinerary can take a little more planning than other city destinations in the US.
Hawaii airlines has some reasonable flights if you book in advance, and they have direct flights from many US cities on the west coast, and even in mid america like my home of Austin Texas. Coming home there are not direct flights. My last set of roundtrip tickers were around $600, not to bad, especially if you plan on staying at least a week.
This is one of the places that is going to be expensive in Hawaii, we stayed at one of the lower end hotels on Wiki Beach for 180 a night. In Honolulu, that is about as good as you are gong todo without staying in a real dump.
This is one area that you can really see the difference in pricing from other places in the states. There is no getting around it, it's expensive. Try to avoid the 5$ cokes and coffees and that can be a big help. Also finding some of the local restaurants just off the beaten path can help keep that budget in line.
There is no need to rent a car while staying in Honolulu, if you wanted to make a day trip around the island, just rent the car for that day. We took the bus tour around the island with our city pass instead. I would highly recommend resisting the urge to rent a moped. You can walk most of Waikiki, or uber it around super cheap, as the entire stip is only a few miles long, and 10 or so bocks wide.
The Big Island - This is the place to Rent a Car or Jeep. You can get the cars on the cheep, the 4x4's a Jeeps not so much. If you are into camping and roughing it a little, there are more options for this on the BIg Island. Hilo, the biggest city on the island, isn't that great of a tourism location. The main resorts are on the other side of the island.
Like many fun vacation destinations the City Pass can be a great way to hit all the tourist stuff on a limited budget. The City Pass Hawaii is for attractions on the island of Oahu , and most, but not all of them in the city of Honolulu. The City pass typically includes Luau, at one of 2 destinations and different packages include all sorts of stuff form beach, boats, and access to the museums, One of the best City Pass destination deals you can find. Unlike other places, you have to make reservations for most of the activities, and put down deposits on your credit card to sign up. The deposits are typically charged if you do not show up for the event, so keep that in mind.
