While New York has the reputation as an expensive place, it can be a very affordable vacation if you put in a little effort and are willing to stay in modest hotel accommodations. If you plan your trip a few weeks in advance you can find some of the cheapest airfare in the US from just about any town. There have been a few times my Taxi ride was more expensive than the plane ticket.
Tip for Discount Travel to NYC.
There is no subway service from the New Jersey Airport (Newark), and the Uber or Taxi ride is over 100 in manhattan.
If I'm going to New York on a discount trip, I always stay at the Eddison. It's in the heart of Times Square and has an old school feel to, including a cool diner. The rooms are tiny, but who cares. You are in NYC and there is not much need to sleep or hang out in your room. The rooms can be a little noisy from all the street noise. But that's a price you have to pay for a discount room in the Big Apple.
City Pass
Like just about every major city in the US, the city pass is the way to go for the tourist looking for discounts on all that tourism stuff. New Yorks' City pass used to be one of the best deals out there, but ye old skimpflation has made this less of a great deal. Its only 40% off the retail value, and doesn't include the really cool double decker bus tours. As of the writing of this article For $250, you get access to:
While New York has an overwhelming selection of restaurants from the ultra fancy to expensive, there are all sorts of options for the budget minded. From street vendors to Pizza shops on just about every block, you can also find ethnic food from all over the world.
The subway is easy to use, affordable, and can take you all over the city. While the subway isn't the cleanest, it sure is convenient and it's way better than it used to be. If your on the discount plan, the subway is for you. Manhattan is also not that big of place, if you like to walk, you can walk to most of the tourist spots from the time square area.
I took my kids to New York City for the first time when she was about 5. One of our first tourist destinations was the Guggenheim Museum. When we went to the first ramp and got to the first exhibit, my daughter asked me in the most innocent way "Daddy, did you do this painting". Of course, I told her that I did, and for the next few hours we went through the entire museum and I got to tell her all about all the fancy artwork that I had done for the Guggenheim. She was so proud that her dad. It was years later before I told her the truth.
Central Park One the largest and most impressive city parts in the US. Just walking around can take a few hours of the day. The swing sets are free and all sorts of fun.
Discount Broadway Tickets
Many of the popular shows can be several hundred dollars a ticket. The obvious way to see a play for an affordable price is to attend a show at one of the smaller theaters off broadway. You can also get tickets at a discount from TKTS Booths. They sell same day tickets in Time Square for up to 50% off, or you can also use the App.
https://www.todaytix.com/ Today Tickets also has broadway tickets on the cheap on with some sort of lottery system that I have never used.
