Utah is a vast wilderness playground with some of the best mountain ranges and skiing in the world. But the adventures do not stop at the bottom of the lifts.
Brighton Ski Resort, perched at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon, is our destination of choice in Utah. But on our day off from the slopes, we made our way to Antelope Island State Park, where the buffalo and antelope roam free.
Antelope Island State Park is one of those places that feels like you are in a different time and place — a rugged island rising out of the Great Salt Lake with wide-open views in every direction. Just a short drive from Salt Lake City, Utah, it is the perfect escape for anyone looking to experience a little taste of the Old West.
The island is known for its dramatic mountains, golden hills, and shoreline trails. On a clear day, you can see for miles across the lake. It is an incredible spot for hiking, biking, photography, and camping.
What makes Antelope Island truly special is the wildlife. The island is home to a herd of free-roaming American bison, along with pronghorn antelope, mule deer, coyotes, and more than 200 bird species.
You typically have to drive the island roads for a bit to find them, but that is part of the fun. On our trip, it took us about 30 minutes of driving to find our first buffalo, and we only spotted a few small herds during the entire visit.
Antelope Island is about 15 miles long and around 5 miles wide. You drive across a 7-mile causeway to get there, and once you are on the island, it feels like stepping into another world with free-roaming bison, antelope, and incredible views across the lake.
In some spots, you can literally see how far the Great Salt Lake has receded over the years, with huge salt flats where water used to be. The unique landscape makes Antelope Island one of the most memorable outdoor destinations in Utah.
At the far end of Antelope Island, the Fielding Garr Ranch is a quick stop that adds a cool bit of history to the trip. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved ranch sites in Utah, with original buildings that show what life was like out there in the late 1800s.
We spent about four hours on our trip from Sandy, Utah. Antelope Island is one of the many must-see attractions that are just a short drive from Salt Lake City. It is a great place for wildlife viewing, scenic drives, photography, and exploring a different side of Utah beyond the ski resorts.
