Fishing at the Starbase

Our recent fishing trip was to the beach just feet away from Starbase and the launch pad for Starship. Located in Boca Chica, the beach offers surf fishing and a chance to catch some fish and some sunshine. We got to see the Starship rocket up close and put a few fish on the lines.

Types of Fish You Can Catch in the Surf Right Next to Starbase

1. Sea Cats: They are everywhere, and it’s hard not to catch them if you have shrimp or cut bait on the bottom. They taste pretty decent, but if you keep one, the other fishermen will make fun of you.
2. Whiting: A small fish that is also all over the surf, bays, and just about anywhere except the big open ocean waters. They taste great, and the other fishermen won’t think you’re a loser for keeping them.
3. Reds: A big drum fish that is harder to catch in the surf. They are excellent table fare and one of the most popular game fish in the bays and around the jetties.
4. Speckled Trout: Arguably some of the best table fare. You can sometimes catch them in the surf, but they are mainly found back in the bays and marshes.
5. Sharks: You can catch a shark just about anywhere off the surf if you wait long enough. We have not been shark fishing on this particular beach yet, but it’s on the to-do list.

Starship Launch

This was about our fifth time making the trip, and we have seen it launch about half the time.

The malfunction was with the new launch pad, not the actual rocket. They ended up launching the next day, but we had already left the island.

I had to wait a week to see the first one.

Starship + Super Heavy is the most powerful rocket ever developed.

SpaceX says Starship is designed to carry more than 100 metric tons to orbit in a fully reusable configuration. That is about 220,000+ pounds.

Starship is designed to be refueled in space, land astronauts on the Moon, and eventually carry people and cargo to Mars.

A realistic guess is a Moon landing in 2028, cargo going to Mars within five years, and hopefully the first humans reaching Mars within 10 years, assuming the testing and refueling technology work out.
